They were buried alive, according to a local custom. If the mother dies in childbirth, her child is buried alive with her. And so it came to pass that a missionary retrieved the twins—they were premature—from their mother's grave and referred us for medical observation. I remember that morning very well. It was a bad morning, and we were excessively eager.
